How the story started

Sheffield has always had a lot going for it as a place to live and work. It’s on the edge of a National Park, it’s got loads of green spaces, the people are friendly and welcoming. And in the last 20 years, the city has really come into its own. The economy here is thriving and the redeveloped city centre looks great. If you want a low cost of living and a high quality of life, Sheffield will suit you well.

A green city

Sheffield has more trees per person than any other European city, so the predominant colour here is green rather than the standard urban grey. It’s the only English city to include part of a National Park in its boundaries. And because it’s built on seven hills, you get fantastic views out to the countryside and into our world-class city centre.

A well-connected city

Sheffield has excellent transport links with the rest of the country. The M1 makes it a straightforward journey to Leeds and London, while Manchester is about an hour’s drive along the A57.

You can get from Sheffield to London by train in two hours. The closest international airport is Doncaster Sheffield Airport, with Manchester Airport, Leeds Bradford International Airport and East Midlands Airport all within one hour's drive. There’s a direct train to Manchester Airport every hour.

A vibrant city

The Peak District National Park nestles up to the city’s edges, so it’s the perfect place to live if you like the great outdoors. And if you’re more of an urban explorer, there’s still plenty to keep you amused. In the city centre, you’ll find a fantastic selection of shops, nightlife and attractions including the largest theatre complex outside London, four major art galleries and the Winter Gardens. Sheffield’s thriving arts, music, comedy and film scenes make it a lively, cultural city.

There are also some great sporting facilities including Sheffield Ski Village, the Don Valley International Athletics Stadium, IceSheffield (the national ice-skating arena), and Ponds Forge – an international diving and swimming complex.
