Life as an estate officer

Estate Officers keep our neighbourhoods looking decent so that people can enjoy a better standard of living. As the ‘caretakers’ of the estate, they take responsibility for cleaning, tidying, gardening and minor repairs. A typical day might involve pruning the shrubs in a communal garden, removing some graffiti, and cleaning the stairs, lifts and lobbies in a block of flats.

If a home is left vacant, they clear and clean it ready for the next tenant. Likewise, they keep the gardens of empty properties under control. They look after communal areas in the same way – making sure rubbish is disposed of properly, keeping them clean and tidy, and reporting anything that needs fixing. Some basic repairs, they do themselves. Others they pass on to a contractor, then inspect afterwards.

Part of their job is to keep written records of their work. They might also help the Lead Estate Officer with stock control and budgeting.

Estate Officers act as a link between Sheffield Homes and our tenants. They’re out and about in the community so liaising with residents is a regular part of their role. They also get involved in community projects that relate to the upkeep of the estate.
